Georgia Elwiss Ashes Diary
Blog 1 (9.1.14):
It’s been 10 days since we arrived in Perth and so much has already happened. We landed late on New Year’s Eve but managed to get to the hotel to see 2014 in with ten minutes to spare!
The next few days were spent acclimatising and doing some light activity to get the long plane journey out of our legs. This also gave us a good chance to look around Perth and settle in to the surroundings.
Our first training session was at Murdoch University and we decided to set up a competition between the “posh” members of the squad and the slightly “less posh” members… who were ceremoniously referred to as the “commoners”! I am proud to call myself a “poshy” but sadly as I write we are 3-1 down in the series. It’s a long tour though and we are on the comeback!
Our warm up match came around quickly against the Shooting Stars (Australia Women’s A team) and on a red hot day (36 degrees!) we decided to have a bat. Lot (Charlotte Edwards) and Trev (Heather Knight) started off with a fantastic 100 run partnership. Lottie went on to score 77 and Trev finished with 123. There were also good contributions from Lydia with 76 and Nat Sciver with 30. It was also nice for me to get out into the middle and spend some time at the crease having missed the last two tours through injury. We finished on 386 confident we could defend it in 88 overs.
Anya (Shrubsole) and Nunny (Katherine Brunt) came hard at the Australian batters and it was fantastic to watch. It was a good opportunity for our bowlers to get a good run out and get some overs in their legs. It was also good for fielders to get used to playing in the heat! We ended up drawing the match, but it was a good all round performance from the girls.
We are now looking forward to Friday’s Test match at the WACA and getting stuck in to the series. The support so far has been fantastic and we all really appreciate it.
