Georgia Elwiss, Ashes Blog 3, 4.2.14
As I sit here and write my final blog from Hong Kong airport I can officially call myself an Ashes winner! It has been a fantastic achievement for everyone over the last five weeks. The tour has certainly been an emotional rollercoaster but it has been an amazing Series with some excellent cricket played by both sides.
We went into the first twenty20 knowing that a win would secure us the Ashes… And what a performance we put in! Lottie lost the toss, and they elected to have a bat first – proceeding to post a score of 150, which we thought was about par on a good pitch with small boundaries. Then the show really started! Crashing the first ball for four, Lottie was incredible, and she was very ably assisted by Sarah. They finished with 92* and 50* respectively as we chased down the total in the 17th over. Pop open the Champagne and start the celebrations!
The next two twenty20s were disappointing. We were thoroughly out-batted in both. Scoring 98 and 102 won’t win you many games of twenty20 cricket, but the fight we showed in the final game was a positive we could take away.
After the final match we had the formal presentation, and then it was back to the dressing room to sing the team song and revel in what we had just achieved. Beating the Aussies in their own back yard. Wow!
Throughout the whole tour each member of the squad has stepped up and performed when necessary and that has been very pleasing for us. I have thoroughly enjoyed this Ashes Series and it has definitely been one of the best I have ever played in. We are now looking forward to getting home and having a few days off before our preparation for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 begins in March.
